A friend of Richard “Mouser” Williams, a technical staff member at LANL, who was also an extra in the film, played a key role in connecting the director, Nolan, with the relevant sites at LANL. This connection opened up the possibility for LANL researchers to participate in the film as extras.

Williams, along with several of his fellow labmates, seized the chance to be part of the film. To secure their roles, they had to submit photos and show up on set. Williams recalls the scene where Oppenheimer addresses the townspeople after the bomb at Ghost Ranch, which he found unsettling as he was part of the audience in that scene. He humorously mentions that he had a child on his shoulders during the wide shot of 400 people appointed as extras, making it easier for him to spot himself in the film when watching it in the theater.

While Williams enjoyed his small role in “Oppenheimer,” he admits that it was challenging to find himself amidst the crowd on the big screen. He spent most of his time viewing the film trying to spot his fellow labmates who were also involved in the scenes.
